My Trip to Beautiful Boston (Day 1)

Boston is a wonderful city filled with historical sights and sounds of a busy modern city.
It was a pretty random and yet pleasurable trip.
I would highly recommend visiting Boston.
I found the city to be tourist friendly, the FREEDOM TRAIL was great and the food was delicious.
This is part 1 of 4.

The Freedom Trail was basically a red line on the ground that you could follow and it would go by all these cool historical sights and interesting events. They also had a lot of signs that provided background descriptions. It’s free and takes about 1-3 hrs to navigate. It made the day planning a whole lot easier 🙂

Massachusetts State House
Completed in Jan 11th, 1798 was said to the big the most magnificent public building in the new nation.
It’s true I really do like giant domed building. However I got to say our SF city hall kicks it’s …
Anyways, I got a really sweet souvenir pin!

Giant World Exhibit in the State House
I don’t really know why it was there or what they were doing.
Occasionally I would see the world deflating a grown men come out of the world.
How peculiar!

Really old chair in the State House
I’m not sure if this chair is older than America. It well could be.
The guide said the chair was very old and basically held together by inspiration.
I like that thought. A chair held together by inspiration.

Sweets Shop
This was a really adorable cupcake shop.
We got cheesecake cupcake and banana split cupcake.
Both were super delicious! I’m glad we got them.

Some cool old building in North End, Boston
I think it was by a sign that said Paul Revere’s House but it wasn’t. It’s just a neat building.
I like traveling to new places and looking at all the different architecture.
It almost feels like time traveling.

Gourmet Cajun Mac & Cheese from Quincy Market
Quincy market is a neat place that contains a food court, shops and tons of tourists like me.
It’s interesting to think that hundred of years ago people visited the market and here I am.
The mac & cheese was surprisingly delicious and very cheesy.

Prosciutto & Asparagus Pasta  at Pasta Beach
It was creamy and a divine dish! Everything I could have wanted from pasta.
Pasta Beach is a nice, hip restaurant by the pier.
It was bubbling with people and had a very nice ambiance.

Boston Cream Pie Martini from The Omni Parker House
A nightcap anyone?
They sure know how to make a cocktail!
It was strong, sweet and chocolatey.
The Omni-Parker house plays quite a interesting part in history and fairly well preserved.
JFK proposed to Jackie,Ho Chi Minh was a baker there, and Malcolm X was a busboy!

a Cannoli in Boston’s North End

A couple of weeks ago I got to travel to Boston.
My friend Jennifer recommended trying the cannoli at Boston’s North End.
I got one at this tiny little Italian corner bakery and man was it delicious!
It’s was a mini cannoli covered in chocolate chips. Perfect for a after lunch dessert 🙂
Sophie was a very happy girl indeed!

Day 1 – Grandparents Cooking

I’m a very lucky girl.
Currently, I’m getting to visit my grandparents in their new house.
I can’t believe how quickly they have settled into the warm and sunny coastal town.

I don’t know if it’s all Asian families but it seems our lives revolve around food.
We never really talk about how we are doing as much as “Have you eaten yet?”
Life in my family does require some food training as we tend to eat many courses and many different types of food.

Here is my lunch: fresh tasty mangoes, fried eggs with soy sauce, rich beef cubes with daikon (white carrot), and some sort of mochi pastry my mom made.
Then my grandma made some more noodles and I think we might had some battered fish too! So much food! Yum! Yum!

What do you usually eat at home?
Do you eat interesting mixtures of this and that? Or are your meals very structured?

p.s. Man it always seems to amuse me how after you “grid” the mango, it pops up and become so much easier to eat 🙂

What do you make for Breakfast?

This is what I usually end up having for breakfast on the weekends.
I like to use up my fresh vegetables and I had a side of Trader Joes’  hash browns which are mighty delicious.

Sometimes I do omelets,  sometimes I do frittata, but most of the time it’s a Sophie hodge podge!

Anyways, I liked the variety of colors and vegetables in this picture.
There’s baby tomatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, onion, yellow pepper and pinch of seasoning.

What do you like to make for breakfast?

My New Love for French Macarons & Miette’s Bakery

449 Octavia St
San Francisco, CA 94102
Price ($)
*I think there’s also stores in Ferry Building and Oakland.

Welcome to Miette’s!
Jennifer and I stumbled upon Miette’s when trying out Smitten ice cream across the way.
This incredibly cute bakery and sweet shop has now become one of my guilty pleasure.
The staff is very friendly, the sweets are delicious, colorful atmosphere and they have a macaron happy hour!

Yes you heard me a french macaron happy hour at this location on Octavia!
– Monday to Friday from 5-7pm
– French Macarons are $1 each (reguarly $1.75)
– Limit 6

This is a photo of my 1st french macaron ever.

It was a hazelnut french macaron from Miette’s.

It was slightly nutty, a bit of crunch, chewy, sweet and Nutella flavored cream.

…It was divine. Now there’s no going back.
Anyways, I didn’t know I would love macarons. I always thought they would be very airy, crunchy and taste a bit like chalk. I don’t know why I thought this but I did …until Miette’s.

They have 6-7 flavor of french macarons and they can vary day to day. So far I’ve had the liberty of tasting rose, orange chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut, and chocolate. Yes they are all amazing!!! I do love the hazelnut the best.

This is love.
So you may think this is a bit silly to declare love for the 1st French macaron that I meet.
However, I assure you with the utmost ability that yes! this really is a delicious macaron.
I know it in my heart we are meant to be.

The other goodies I got from the shop were equally as delicious!

– Miette Chocolate Sable Cookies dipped in Sea Salt and Dark Chocolate – highly recommended for chocolate addicts!
– A piece of Caramel
– A assortment of black licorice from the candy jars for someone special

I saw at Costco and that Miette has a cookbook out.
Has anyone tried it? I’m very interested in picking it up!

Recently I’ve been doing a Taco Tuesday with a couple of friends of mine.
This is one of our regular places. The tacos were pretty good, however they only had grilled fish tacos.
Is it bad but I prefer my fish fried to grilled. Fried food just so good 🙂

My latest makeup love! It’s the Milani Illuminating Powder in Amber Nectar. It’s gorgeous!
The flowers are actually imprinted into the powder so the image will last quite sometime.
I like to use on my cheekbones as it gives a perfect glow with a hint of peach.

Milani Illuminating Face Power – Amber Nectar ($)
Can be purchased where ever Milani  is sold, I got mine at Walgreens

Dude yes I did consume this monstrosity. You have to live every once in awhile!
There’s a a open faced hamburger somewhere in there, smothered in chili, sauce, onions and cheese.
I definitely have to say Pearls is one my favorite place for a burger.
It’s quick, affordable, nice atmosphere, sweet staff and omg! delicious burgers!
Don’t worry not everything is this far in the deep end. 🙂

The Bomb Burger – ($)
Pearls Deluxe Burger – 1001 Market Street, San Francisco, CA

I just had to take a picture of this crazy swing. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.
This is a swinging monkey palm tree?!? I wanted to go on it so bad but sadly too old for such things I just looked.
Tell me please if you’ve experienced this!!!

Imanbayildi pilav

Grilled Eggplant stuffed with zucchini, peppers and cauliflower served with a side of risotto and grilled vegetables

Eggplant stuffed with ground beef, tomatoes, onions, garlic, chopped parsley baked and served with rice and vegetables

The restaurant was small and cozy.
The service was prompt.
They give you a flat bread and some dipping sauce before the meal.
We both enjoyed our entrees, large portions and it was quite hot.
Verdict – Filling and I would consider stopping by again

Gelato Classico Italian Ice Cream
241 Castro St
Mountain View, CA 94041
Type – Gelato

( Sorbet in Lemon & Mango)

I felt the sorbet  was refreshing and the fruity flavors tasted fresh.
I particularly enjoy the mango taste.

(Chocolate & Double Espresso)

I really like the favor and richness of the gelato.
I thought the chocolate hit the spot.

The gelato shop has wide range of 10-15 flavors of gelato and sorbet.
Depending on the size of the cup, you can choose multiple flavors.
We got the small size approx $4
The shop has 2-3 tables and usually a line out of the door!
The only con is that they only accept cash
Verdict – Very Tasty, you should try it out.

We also stopped by the Red Rock Cafe.
My friends say they have the best coffee in town.
Thanks for joining me of my adventure 🙂

Sophie’s Spectacular Adventures in the Bay Area #4 (San Francisco, Rock Bands, and Rooftops)

Atomic Tom @ Hotel Utah
Score for $12 I was able to see Jahmeel, The Dance Party and Atomic Tom.
It was a amazing concert as it was intimate small space and they put on an excellent show.
My favorite Atomic Tom song is Red Light Warning Sign and Collide.
The Dance Party are rock stars and I’d recommend Hush/ Snake Eyes songs.
San Francisco, California
Verdict – GO GO GO see them 🙂

Sophie @ The Capital Building
This is by far my favorite building in San Francisco.
It’s absolutely breath taking at night when the whole building is lit up and sort of golden.
The architecture looks back to a romantic era of elegance.
San Francisco, California
Verdict – It’s called Love

Inglot Cream Blush in 80 @ Inglot Counter in Macy’s, Union Square
On a whim when I was swatching things at the Inglot counter I found this blush.
This is makeup changer!
The pigmentation is rich, blend-able and light on my cheeks.
San Francisco, California
Verdict – You got to get this! Stay Tuned for a full review.

Walking around SOMA
We went out looking for furniture and found this gorgeous mural on side of a building.
I”m not sure if it’s graffiti or not but it’s amazing.
I love how vibrant and movement based the artwork is.
San Francisco, California
Verdict – I need to get back into finding my art groove

Currently on my mind… what’s for lunch?

Sophie’s Spectacular Adventures in the Bay Area #3 (hotpot, ducks, and stripey nails)

Individual Hot Pot Set @ Where?

I can’t seem to remember the name of this restaurant it’s in a plaza right next to Ranch 99.
Anyways, it was super scrumptious and filling! You could choose between a set menu (reg. /mala) or individual orders.
I choose the regular soup with beef set menu. It comes with your own individual hotpot, creamy white seafood based soup, vermicelli noodles or rice, dipping sauce, chinese cabbage (bai cai), and soup is filled with fish cakes, tofu and vegetables. I also tasted some of the mala – spicy variety and that was quite tasty too.
The set menu was around $13-17 dollars depending on ingredients.
San Jose, California
Verdict – I’m interested in going back for more

Apartment Complex @ Somewhere Downtown San Jose
I thought this building was really intriguing because if you look closely the windows are all slightly different.
They are like puzzle piece windows!
San Jose, California
Verdict – Who designed this?

Stripey Painted Nails
I saw some stripey nails on a beauty blog and I thought I’d try it out.
I used Rimmel 60 seconds in Portobello Pink, Confetti in Belle of the Ball, and Art Deco nail art liner in white.
The Art Deco polish has a very fine thin tip that makes it easier to draw the stripes.
I really enjoy the Rimmel 60 seconds polish as it’s fast drying, opaque and thick brush.
So what do you think do you think?
I quite like it.

Recycling Plant @ Another Random Day in my life 🙂
So long story short we went on a walk and followed a set of train tracks this is where it led us.
It’s interesting because it looked abandoned since it was the weekend.
There’s tons of piles of rocks and it appears at the plant they grind it to fine dusty concrete.
San Jose, California
Verdict – sometimes in one’s backyard there’s all sort of things you’ve never experienced before
One just has to do some exploring.

Sound Pit Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil Show @ HP Pavilion
This was my 1st cirque du soleil show 🙂
They had amazing acrobats, music, and I was quite impressed by the entire storyline of MJ
I loved how couple of the acts had these lit up dancing suits.
It did really make me wish I had been able to see Michael Jackson live.
Verdict – I will be going back to see the circus for the Totem show in March!

Ducks a floating by Target
Just watching some ducks chilling in a stream while doing run to Target.
P.S. I’m the Green one.

Well that’s another post of my life.
Are you enjoying them 😛

Sophie’s Spectacular Food Adventures in the Bay Area #2 (Ramen, Coffee, and Fortunes)

Philly Cheese Steak @ The Cheese Steak Shop
We stopped by for a quick bite to eat before the Michael Jackson Cirque du Soliel show.
It comes with thinly sliced cheese steak, spicy peppers, provolone cheese and white roll.
For additional charge, the shop offers a variety of choices and topping to customize your burger.
San Jose, California
Verdict – It was ok and they had prompt service.

Cafe Sua Doa @ Hai Ky Mi Gia
Iced french dripped dark roasted coffee with condensed milk
San Francisco, California
Verdict – Right down my alley as I’ve grown to like the strong roasted flavor and the sweetness.

Butter Corn Ramen @ Ramen House Ryowa
It actually had a slab of butter in the salt based ramen soup! (seen in picture)
I enjoyed the loads of sweet corn and consistency of the egg noodles.
Mountain View, California
Verdict – Would come back to try other ramen soup bases and friendly server

Chinese Food with our friends Hoang & Minh (I forgot the name)
This was a pretty sweet deal as it was $7 and we got to try like 6 different dishes.
There was wonton soup, fried rice, fried noodle, sweet & sour pork, broccoli with beef, and almond chicken.
San Francisco, California
Verdict – Food was average but the company was wonderful, plenty to eat, and the lady was friendly.

This was my fortune…
